New exchange agreement creates more opportunities for collaboration between Mexico and Notre Dame
In the Spring of 2025, the University took another significant step forward in building partnerships with Mexican institutions. On March 5, Vice President & Associate Provost for Internationalization Michael Pippenger, joined by Notre Dame Mexico Director Maria Mercedes Salmon, met with the presidents of a consortium of polytechnic and technological public institutions in Querétaro to sign an exchange agreement. This formalized advancement in partnership is an indication that Mexican governments and institutions recognize Notre Dame’s expertise in technological, automotive, data science, and aeronautical studies.
Chile provides fruitful opportunities for collaboration and research
Successful collaborative research like Colón-Rodríguez’s is one of many instances of thriving Notre Dame partnerships happening in Chile. Chile has been the home for research in a number of disciplines over the years—including sociology, theology, and fine arts. Since the 1970s, with the instrumental help of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Notre Dame Santiago has been developing both academic and service partnerships, strategically building a network for faculty and staff to use. One key partnership is with UC Chile (formerly the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile or PUC)—one of the top Catholic, research universities in Latin America. This strong relationship, and the presence of Notre Dame Santiago right on UC Chile’s San Joaquin campus, allows for student and faculty exchanges, shared research, sabbatical opportunities, internships, and several dual Ph.D. programs. Notre Dame Global strengthens ties in Brazil with recent visit and MOU signing
Last month, Michael Pippenger, Notre Dame’s vice president & associate provost for internationalization, traveled to São Paulo to deepen the University of Notre Dame’s long-standing academic and research partnerships with Brazilian institutions. He joined the Notre Dame São Paulo team in meeting several university leaders to discuss future collaborations and solidified a partnership with São Paulo State University (UNESP) by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The MOU with UNESP marked another stride forward in Notre Dame’s global strategy to strengthen international partnerships and increase global research opportunities.
“This is a new era for Brazil and Notre Dame,” shares Burmeister de Campos Pires. “Brazil has a lot of resources, a lot of potential — Notre Dame is realizing that.”
Tsinghua students see stars at Kylemore for the first time
A group of about 30 students and faculty from the University of Tsinghua in Beijing visited Ireland on a cultural enrichment trip organized by Jingyu Wang of Notre Dame Beijing, in partnership with Notre Dame Dublin and Notre Dame Kylemore.
It was a week of many firsts for this group of young people who grew up in one of the world’s most populated cities. They might have expected Ireland's green landscapes, but not to be swept away in dance at the traditional Irish music house Teach Ceoil, not the neolithic bones dug up by rabbits on Omey Island, and certainly not, on the darkest night, unpolluted by city lights, to see the bright Connemara stars—for some of them, for the first time.
Notre Dame Rome signs agreement with Rome’s Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali
The collaboration allows Notre Dame faculty, undergraduate students and graduate students privileged study and research access to the newly opened Parco Archeologico del Celio, a park overlooking the Colosseum that preserves significant archaeological artifacts.
“This partnership with such a premiere cultural institution in the city is already making possible synergies that were unimaginable before,” said Silvia Dall’Olio, director of Notre Dame Rome. “Moreover, the physical proximity on the Celio Hill between Notre Dame’s facilities and the Parco Archeologico strengthens and makes our reciprocal commitment to the neighborhood more visible.”
Provost McGreevy strengthens partnerships in Mexico
Provost John McGreevy’s October visit to Notre Dame Mexico, the first by a University leader at this level in ten years, marked a significant step in strengthening the University’s presence in the region.
Meeting with senior academic leaders from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Universidad Panamericana, Universidad Iberoamericana, and Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla, the Provost reaffirmed Notre Dame’s commitment to long term, institution-to-institution partnerships. These conversations focused on increasing collaborative research, expanding faculty exchange opportunities, and enhancing the academic and cultural experience of students studying abroad.
